Matt and Stephen built their first van in their shared garage in Boulder, Colorado. It all started with a Dodge Pro Master and one piece of plywood. Stephen was leaving for a sales trip and needed a kitchen to make the trip more comfortable. After a quick design on some scrap paper and a trip to the hardware store, Matt built the first kitchen out of a single sheet of plywood. Since then we’ve seen our humble kitchen passed from van to van giving many folks their first taste of “van life.”

After spending four years working for two different van upfitters, Matt decided the only way to do it right was to do it himself. Stephen commited his expertise and, in 2017, we found our own space and started assembling the proper equipment to unleash our creativity on the industry. In January of 2018 our first van hit the road. Adventure Vehicle Concepts was born.

Since then we’ve been making your ideas into reality. We love building amazing vehicles for all types of people. We use the latest technology and radical designs to create unique vehicles, giving you new ways to experience the outdoors.

The Lean Tree logo was based on the fishing spot where Stephen and Matt became friends: a certain spot on the Arkansas River with an undercut bank and a tree leaning out over the water. It’s one of our favorite places to fish, and an inspiring place to enjoy a day on the river. When we were forming our company we wanted our logo to reflect a place that we both love and that tells our story. This was the place Stephen grew up fishing, where we brought Stephens first van, and a place we love to stop whenever passing through.

I got my first taste of the outdoors traveling the country with my family in our Chevy van. Every summer we’d hit the road to camp, fish, and explore the US. Once in High School my love for the outdoors was solidified while working for a Summer Camp near Lake Tahoe. In college I studied large scale sculpture and honed my skills as a maker. I made my way to Colorado in 2011 and started exploring all the amazing places my new home had to offer. Now I love to camp with my own family all over the West. We love to go skiing, biking, fishing, and enjoy each campfire to the last ember.

Adventure has always been in my blood. Since I was a young lad I have been visiting the mountains. The early years consisted of road trips with my family from Kansas. We would drive to Buena Vista, CO, mostly, and tent camp in the Arkansas River Valley. As I grew up, my passions led me to live out west. I settled in the front range of Colorado where I am a sales representative in the outdoor industry. I’ve traveled every back road CO, NM, WY, and UT has to offer in some type of outfitted adventure vehicle. Along the way I enjoy climbing, fly fishing, skiing, trail running, and mountain biking. Can’t stop, won’t stop.
